What Is The Giant Charity BookFest?

What is the BookFest?

Since inception in 1995 in early May each year several thousand people gather to browse over some 100,000 books, magazines, games, puzzles, CD's and DVD's.

About four months before the BookFest, Heretaunga Bookfest Charitable Trust sets up collection points for used (PRE-LOVED) books at supermarkets and selected retail outlets. Many people donate books they no longer need and we co-ordinate their collection, sorting and presentation in one mighty annual book sale.

BookFest has become an annual event for many avid readers, the young and not so young, keen to store up on books for the coming winter and at the same time make a contribution towards many worthwhile community projects within the Hutt Valley.

It has grown to include the sale of puzzles and games, delicious BBQ sausages and home made ginger beer. It now includes shipping books to the Pacific Islands at no cost to the recipients.

BookFest is the Heretaunga Bookfest Charitable Trust's major annual fundraising event. Many local businesses lend their support towards the organisation of BookFest resulting in a range of local Community groups directly benefiting from this combining of Community resources.

In 2020 the Heretaunga Bookfest Charitable Trust was formed and the organisation and running of Bookfest was passed from the Heretaunga Rotary Club to Heretaunga Bookfest Charitable Trust.
